The median market cap of these funds varies greatly, but most own companies that have capitalizations of less than $2 billion. These smaller companies represent 85% of the total number of exchange listed companies, however their total capitalization is less than 10% of the combined stock exchanges. Risk is inherent in these companies because they rely heavily on revenues from a narrow product base or sell their products to very few customers.
